Baltimore City 4-H Teen Corps Leadership (Teen Corps) began in 1998 and has proven to be a sustainable program that can be implemented in any community.  Teen Corps is a Maryland 4-H program that targets youth ages 12 to 18.

The overall goal of Teen Corps is to develop leadership skills and provide youth with leadership opportunities that focus on service-learning, community mapping, entrepreneurship, and environmental science.  Some areas of leadership development are:

  • Personal development
  • Organizational and communication skills
  • Networking
  • Career development
  • Workforce preparation
  • Resume writing
  • Interviewing techniques
  • Business planning

There are five things you need to start a program in your community:

  • 4-H youth and adult leaders
  • Community partners
  • Time:  commit to meet on a monthly basis
  • Place:  a safe environment to learn
  • Commitment to teaching forward:  youth practice new leadership skills while teaching other 4-H youth
