Green Jobs Resource Center

  • Overview
  • Green Opportunities by Organization Name
  • Green Opportunities by Market Sector
  • More Resources
Welcome to the Green Jobs Resource Center. As the message of sustainability penetrates business and industry the number of green job opportunities is growing both in actual numbers of jobs and in job categories. You may find your dream green job in a new green business, like renewable energy or recycling, or you may find your dream green job in a traditional business that is "going green" like retail or manufacturing.  A green job may have you knee deep in a saltwater marsh managing a wildlife ecosystem. Or you may find yourself sitting at a desk knee deep in logistics as you manage corporate sustainability for a financial services company or a hospital. Whatever your skills, education, or interest, there is a green job for you.

What does it mean to be a green business? Green enterprises contribute to restoring and preserving the quality of the environment by protecting ecosystems and biodiversity, reducing consumption, reducing carbon in the atmosphere, and eliminating waste and pollution.

Government programs, academic research, industry trade associations, and non-profit advocacy groups are promoting sustainability in every industry, across all sectors. Renewable energy, which includes biofuel, biomass, geothermal, hydro, solar, tidal, wave and wind power, is a rapidly growing, rapidly changing field. Environmental management has evolved from managing air, water, and soil quality, to include fostering biodiversity, responding to climate change, and improving indoor environments. And sustainability itself is now widely recognized as a "three-legged stool" that requires economic, social, and environmental sustainability to support life on Earth.

If you use your favorite search engine and search on "green jobs" the results bring up hundreds of millions of hits. Youtube, Facebook, LinkedIn, the blogosphere, and Twitter each have innumerable pages/links for green jobs, green business, and green careers.  How to wade through the search results to find reliable sources relevant to your interests? Here are three tips:

1.) Find a trusted source of information.
Federal and state government websites often have primers on industries and market sectors along with links to businesses and organizations that participate in their programs. Industry trade associations and non-profit advocacy groups spotlight their news, issues, and members on their websites, as well as having member directories.

2.) Know your industry/market sector.
Identify the industry/market sector that has the most potential to meet your requirements for a job, and then learn all you can about what's new, who's important, the leaders, the challenges, and the opportunities in your target field.

3.) Green is a state of mind.
Many green jobs require an academic degree or professional certification. But many simply require an understanding of how to do the job more sustainably. Learn the principles of sustainability and how to apply them. Develop the mindset and practice of re-use, recycle, re-purpose, renew. Your green state of mind will give you a competitive edge in your search for a green job.

We hope someday all jobs will be green jobs, but for now it's up to us to make it so by building green businesses, and stewarding them with green careers.
